Step-by-Step: How to use coco peat for raising seedlings
Step 1: Prepare the Coco Peat
If you’re using compressed coco peat blocks or bricks, place them in a large container.
Add water gradually — about 4 to 5 liters of water for every 1 kg block.
Allow the block to absorb the water and expand fully. This usually takes 15-30 minutes.
Break it apart with your hands or a garden tool until it becomes light, fluffy, and free of lumps.
Step 2: Check and Adjust the pH (Optional but Recommended)
Coco peat usually has a pH between 5.5 and 6.5, which suits most plants.
If you're raising seedlings that need specific pH levels, test the pH and adjust if necessary by adding lime (to raise pH) or sulfur (to lower pH).
Step 3: Pre-Wash to Reduce Salts (Optional but Best Practice)
Some coco peat may have residual salts.
Rinse the expanded coco peat with clean water and let the excess water drain off.
This ensures a safer environment for delicate seedlings.
Step 4: Mix with Other Ingredients (Optional)
For best results, you can mix coco peat with:
Perlite or vermiculite for extra aeration.
A small amount of compost or organic fertilizer to provide nutrients (as coco peat is inert and nutrient-free).
A common mix ratio is 70% coco peat + 30% perlite for seedlings.
Step 5: Fill Seedling Trays or Pots
Fill your seedling trays, nursery bags, or small pots with the prepared coco peat (or coco peat mix).
Lightly press it down, but do not compact it too much — seedlings need loose, airy soil for root development.
Step 6: Sow the Seeds
Make shallow holes according to the seed size (usually 2-3 times the seed's diameter).
Place one seed in each hole and cover lightly with coco peat.
Water gently using a spray bottle or fine mist watering can.
Step 7: Maintain Moisture
Keep the coco peat consistently moist but not soggy.
Water lightly and regularly to ensure seedlings don’t dry out.
Use a transparent cover or place trays in a humid environment to encourage germination.
Step 8: Provide Light and Warmth
Place the trays in a bright location with indirect sunlight or under grow lights.
Maintain a warm temperature (most seeds germinate well between 20°C to 25°C).
Step 9: Care for Seedlings
Once seedlings sprout, gradually expose them to more light.
Water as needed, ensuring the medium stays moist but well-drained.
Start light feeding with diluted liquid fertilizer once seedlings develop their first true leaves.
Step 10: Transplant When Ready
When seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves and strong roots, they are ready to be transplanted into larger pots or your garden.
Coco peat makes transplanting easy as roots are less disturbed.
